Calculate tips for restaurants and services
In the United States and Canada, the standard tip percentage ranges from 15% to 20% of the total pre-tax bill. 15% is typically for average service, 18% for good service, and 20% or more for outstanding service.
To calculate a tip, multiply the bill subtotal by the tip percentage (e.g. $50 × 0.18 = $9 tip). Add the tip to the subtotal to find the total bill ($59). To split the bill, divide the total bill by the number of people in the party ($59 / 2 = $29.50 each).
In most European countries, service is often included in the bill ('service compris'). Tipping is not as mandatory as in North America, but rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip of 5% to 10% for good service is highly appreciated.
