Calculate reading time for text
The reading time calculator counts the total number of words in a text and divides it by an average adult reading speed, which is typically 200 words per minute (WPM) for silent reading or 150 WPM for reading aloud.
A normal reading speed for most adults is between 200 and 250 words per minute (WPM). Speed readers can read between 400 and 700 WPM, while children and non-native speakers typically read at slower speeds (100-150 WPM).
Showing an estimated reading time (e.g., '5 min read') at the top of an article sets clear expectations for readers, which increases user engagement and encourages them to read the entire post instead of leaving immediately.
