Calculate healthy pregnancy weight gain
Healthy pregnancy weight gain depends on your pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI). For a woman with a normal BMI (18.5 to 24.9), the recommended weight gain range is 25 to 35 pounds (11.5 to 16 kg). Underweight women may need to gain more, while overweight women need to gain less.
Gradual, healthy weight gain supports the development of the placenta, amniotic fluid, and the growing baby. Gaining too little weight increases the risk of premature birth and low birth weight, while gaining too much weight increases the risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and delivery complications.
Weight gain is not just fat. The baby accounts for about 7.5 lbs. The remaining weight is distributed among the placenta (1.5 lbs), amniotic fluid (2 lbs), uterus growth (2 lbs), breast tissue (2 lbs), increased blood volume (4 lbs), body fluids (4 lbs), and maternal fat stores (7 lbs).
