Calculate and convert file sizes
A Kilobyte (KB) is based on the decimal system (10^3 = 1,000 bytes), while a Kibibyte (KiB) is based on the binary system (2^10 = 1,024 bytes). Operating systems like Windows use binary units to report file sizes, meaning a 1 MB file actually contains 1,048,576 bytes.
To calculate download time, divide the total file size (converted to bits) by your internet connection speed (in bits per second). For example, a 100 MB file = 800 Mb. On a 10 Mbps connection: 800 Mb / 10 Mbps = 80 seconds.
In standard decimal notation, 1 GB is equal to 1,000 MB. In binary notation, 1 GB (technically a Gibibyte) is equal to 1,024 MB.
