Calculate GST amount for goods and services

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST and how does it work?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax on supply of goods and services. It replaced multiple taxes (VAT, Service Tax, Excise). GST is collected at each stage of production/distribution with input tax credit, eliminating cascading taxes.

What are the different GST rates?

GST has four slabs: 5% (essential items), 12% (processed foods, computers), 18% (most goods and services), and 28% (luxury items, cars). Some items are 0% (basic food, healthcare). Gold has special 3% rate. Cess applies to certain goods.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

CGST (Central) and SGST (State) apply equally on intra-state sales—each gets half the GST rate. IGST (Integrated) applies on inter-state sales and imports, going to the central government first, then settled between states.

How do I calculate GST from a total amount?

To extract GST from inclusive price: GST = Total × (Rate / (100 + Rate)). For 18% GST on ₹1180: GST = 1180 × 18/118 = ₹180. To add GST to exclusive price: GST = Price × Rate / 100. Final = Price + GST.

What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?

ITC allows businesses to claim credit for GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales. This prevents tax-on-tax. Example: If you pay ₹18 GST on inputs and collect ₹36 on sales, you remit only ₹18 (36-18) to the government.
