Calculate overall grade from scores

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my weighted average grade?

Multiply each score by its weight, sum all products, then divide by total weights. Example: (Exam 80% × 40 weight) + (Assignment 90% × 20 weight) ÷ 60 = 83.3%.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted grades?

Unweighted treats all assignments equally. Weighted assigns different importance—finals might count 40% while homework counts 10%. Weighted grades better reflect course priorities.

How do I calculate my grade if I drop the lowest score?

Remove the lowest score from calculation. With scores 70, 80, 90, 85 and dropping lowest: (80+90+85) ÷ 3 = 85% instead of (70+80+90+85) ÷ 4 = 81.25%.

What grade do I need on my final to get an A?

Use: Needed Score = (Target - Current × Current Weight) ÷ Final Weight. To get 90% overall with 85% current (worth 70%) and final (worth 30%): (90 - 85×0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 101.67% needed.

How is GPA calculated from letter grades?

Convert letters to points (A=4, B=3, etc.), multiply by credit hours, sum, and divide by total credits. Each institution may have slight variations in the scale.
