Convert radiation units
Gray (Gy) measures the absorbed dose of radiation (the physical amount of energy deposited in matter). Sievert (Sv) measures the biological equivalent dose, taking into account the type of radiation and its impact on human tissue.
Rad and Rem are older, non-SI units of radiation. 100 Rad is equal to 1 Gray (Gy), and 100 Rem is equal to 1 Sievert (Sv). They are still commonly used in historical scientific literature and in the United States.
The average natural background radiation for humans is about 2 to 3 millisieverts (mSv) per year. A single chest X-ray exposes a patient to about 0.1 mSv, while a full-body CT scan can expose a patient to about 10 mSv.
